When the Ikon Stopped, I Walked: Bheemeshwara Bound
🛕 Shri Bheemeshwara Temple & Waterfalls – A Hidden Gem in the Forests of Karnataka
Tucked away in a quiet corner off the Kargal to Bhatkal road, Shri Bheemeshwara Temple is a unique and ancient cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, set against the mesmerizing backdrop of a natural waterfall and surrounded by the dense forests of the Western Ghats. If you're a nature lover or spiritual seeker with a taste for the offbeat, this spot is pure magic.
🌿 A Temple Wrapped in Nature & Myth
According to local legends, this sacred temple was built by the Pandavas during their exile. The waterfall flows directly over the shrine, making it one of the most mystical Shiva temples in Karnataka. The setting is remote, peaceful, and incredibly scenic — it’s the kind of place that makes you pause and just breathe in the silence of nature.
🥾 Getting There – A Mini Trek Adventure
To reach the temple, you’ll need to get off the main road and trek about 1.5 km through a lush forest path. It's more of a mud road than a trail, and while 4x4 vehicles or local jeeps are available for hire, many prefer walking to soak in the raw beauty of the forest.
The walk itself is beautiful and immersive: green canopy overhead, birdsong all around, and even a small stream crossing with a wooden bridge — perfect for a peaceful break or a few photos.
Just a heads-up: during the monsoon, leeches are common (and seem to love visitors!), so dress accordingly and carry some salt or repellents.
💧 Waterfalls: Look, Don’t Leap!
The waterfall here is sacred, and although it’s absolutely stunning, bathing or playing in the falls is not recommended. The rocks are steep and slippery, and the space near the shrine is limited. However, the view itself is worth every step — especially post-monsoon, when the falls are at their fullest.
📝 Pro Tip: Avoid summer months if you're coming for the waterfall — the flow dries up, and you might miss out on the temple’s true charm.
📍 Where is Shri Bheemeshwara Temple Located?
Shri Bheemeshwara Temple is located near Aralagodu village, nestled deep in the Western Ghats, about 40 km from both Jog Falls and Bhatkal town. It's right along the scenic road that connects these two places, and yes — it's available on Google Maps, making it easy to locate.
🚗 How to Reach Bheemeshwara Temple
🛣️ By Road
From Bengaluru, it’s around 440 km via Shivamogga → Talaguppa → Jog Falls.
While there are no direct buses to Bheemeshwara, you can take a KSRTC or private bus to either Jog Falls or Bhatkal.
From there, hop onto a local bus heading toward the opposite town — ask to get down at Bheemeshwara bus stop.
From the bus stop, the temple is still 2 km away — a stretch of muddy road through the forest. The route includes 1 km downhill and 1 km uphill. You’ve got a few options here:
🚘 If you're driving: A 4x4 vehicle is ideal. But if you’ve got good driving skills 😎, a regular car can also make it with care.
🏍️ Bikers: This is your playground. The ride through forest mud tracks is pure adventure. Go for it!
💡 Note: The route is fully mapped on Google Maps — super easy to navigate.
🚉 By Train
There are no direct trains to the temple. The nearest railway stations are:
Talaguppa – around 50 km away
Bhatkal – slightly farther, but well connected
✈️ By Air
The nearest airport is Mangalore (IXE), approximately 180 km from Bheemeshwara. You can hire a cab or take a bus to reach the temple via Jog Falls or Bhatkal.
🌤 Best Time to Visit
☀️ Summer (Feb to May)
Warm weather with dry waterfalls, but the forest is still green and the climate pleasant.
Good for trekking and exploring the area without the monsoon mess.
🌧 Monsoon (June to Sept)
For rain lovers — it rains nonstop, turning the entire stretch into a misty, magical jungle.
Be ready for mud, leeches, and slippery roads — but that’s part of the charm!
Streams come alive, especially the small one beside the trail. Great for nature lovers!
☁️ Winter (Oct to Jan)
Best time to visit! Foggy mornings, full waterfalls, and crisp air.
The drive is unreal with mist-covered trees and panoramic views all along.
🏨 Accommodation
There are no stay options at the temple itself. Your best bets are:
Jog Falls
Bhatkal town
Or one of the many homestays or eco-resorts within a few kilometers of the area.
🔍 Google Maps is your friend for finding the best nearby stays. You’ll find a mix of basic homestays and forest retreats, depending on your preference.

✨Special Attractions

⚠️Precautions
As said the last 2 km adventure drive is too risky and we have to be very care full. But walking on this path is the most beautiful experience of nature and human.

My Travel Story to Bheemeshwara…
This tour happened on 2019 post monsoon, I think September or October.
The route plan was Bangalore - Sigandhur - Bheemeshwara - Kollur - Sringeri - Horanadu - Dharmasthala - Kukke - Bisle - Bangalore in just 2 days, 😎
The same route plan I have explained in the Guide page.
we were only 3 guys, Myself, Kiran & Vishwa. on my legendary car Ford IKON.
So, after leaving on Friday around 7 pm, we made it to Sigandur by 3:30 am. Brrr! It was freezing cold, but we braved the elements and took a refreshing bath in the cold water. Haha, just kidding! It was quite chilly, but we made it! And guess what? The Sigandur temple opens at 4 am only for the first pooja, and visitors are allowed for Darsana. Trust me, it’s an incredible experience. The temple is stunning, and there’s no crowd. It’s a peaceful and serene atmosphere, and the first pooja is truly special. Plus, the cold weather and fresh air gave us a clear mind and a positive mood. Everything felt brand new and exciting.
After our Darshan, we headed towards “Shri Bheemeshwara Temple & Waterfalls,” which is about 50 km away. The road was a complete forest and village road, and the morning fog and cold breeze made for an amazing driving experience. We didn’t have breakfast, but we were fueled by the excitement of the journey.
we reached the deviation..
"Bheemeshawara Bus Stop" on the Bhatakal - Siddapur - Sorabha highway,, you can find this place in Google maps easily, we reached around 7am,, it was drizzling and it was our first time to this place,, we were thinking what to do,, because form this deviation further 2km is the temple and road looks muddy and downhill,,
I told we go by walk,, car mag get stuck in mud and it's wet everywhere,, but my friends were so fuc*ing lazy,, they told,, let's go Baba, yours's is legend Ikon,, nothing will happen,,,
..the moment they said LEGEND,,
🥰
I was happy and decided to go by car only, without knowing what could be the circumstances, as that time there was no one to ask how is the road condition,,, so we started,,,
beginning was just the down hill,, after few meters few curves, rocks, slugs and more downfall leading to the stream, it was going smooth and from the stream,, after crossing over by small bridge,, the roads were really bad,, complete muddy puddle road,, no chance to go 2 wheel drive,,
if bike it would be possible or for 4x4 it's a awesome drive,,,
but our case not possible,,, we parked there near by the stream, and we walked further 1.5km,,, during summer it's easy to drive over,, but in rainy season it's difficult,,
We reached temple around 8am,, it's an amazing place,, 🫠, just by the name itself,, the waterfalls is right next to the temple only,,, in the middle of the forest,, cold breeze,, birds chirping, waterfall sound,, a glimpse of forest vibe,, overall it's an amazing place,,, note part is this waterfall will be alive during monsoon season only,, if we visit during summer,, there will not be much water,, so better plan post monsoon for safer side,, additionally it's really an offbeat place,,,
We waited till 9am,, the priest arrived and did some pooja,,, we cannot get into waterfall to take bath or take play,, it's sacred and also very slippery,, very less space to stand,,, but we can enjoy the water stream as I said earlier on the way,,, after darshan and small prasadha,, we headed back, where our car was parked,, between this time it rained for 15min heavily,,, we didn't notice or thought about anything about how to get back to main road in car in that muddy slippery road,, coming down was easy,, but now it's up,,, nkn,,,
it was 500m only,, 4 curves,, almost 30-45degrees steep,, drizzling,, muddy road,, sometime big granite rocks resting on the road itself,, rock itself is a road,, 🤬,, we made the first curve,, awesome,, by the moment we came 2nd curve,, car was coming back,, 🤯,, front tire was almost muddy,, it was resting on rock,, i came down and started climbing again,, ,, ahahaha,,, failed,,, my friends tried to hold form back and put stones to read wheel and tried with half clutch and move,,, couldn't help,, 🥴,, I came down again to 1st curve place,, we came up with some strategy to fill those water streaming small paths with stones and drive in that route,,
,,guess what,,
😈
after 30min of struggle,, it worked,, in one straight drive,,, i crossed 3rd, 2nd curve,,, last curve was ok ok,, not much deal,, our entire dress was mud,, my green IKON was looking like complete brownish dirt car,, yet,, finally we reached main road,,, frustrated,, tired,,, no breakfast,, full mud,, shoes gone,, hungry,,, and all these was nothing in front of those memories with friends in that drizzling,, getting out of that struggle,, fun,, teasing,, missed to mention Leeches kisses,,, ufff,,, overall,,, it's awesome..
Kindly visit this place and keep clean,, as I said, post monsoon is good.
Thank you
