Route: Mudigere → Shri Bettada Bhairaveshwara Swamy Temple → Mekanagadde Viewpoint → Devarunda → Angadi → Devaramane | Distance: ~40 km | Time Required: 6–7 hours
🛕 Shri Bettada Bhairaveshwara Swamy Temple & Mekanagadde Betta
Nestled in Maragunda village of Sakleshpura taluk, Hassan district, the Shri Bettada Bhairaveshwara temple offers a serene retreat steeped in history. Though administratively part of Sakleshpura, the temple is geographically nearer to Mudigere, making it accessible from both towns. Perched atop the scenic Pandavara Hill, this temple dedicated to Lord Shiva stands as a testament to ancient craftsmanship.
Built nearly 700 years ago by the Hoysalas using sturdy limestone, the temple's origins trace back even further to the Pandavas, who are believed to have constructed it during their incognito travels. This link connects it to many Shiva temples across India, with Bhairaveshwara temple being among the most prominent.
Visitors can enjoy a smooth drive up to the site, thanks to well-maintained roads. The blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty makes the Shri Bettada Bhairaveshwara temple a compelling destination for travelers exploring Karnataka’s rich cultural heritage.
Trek: Mekanagadde Peak is easy 10–15 min walk from the temple | Best Time: Sunrise or Sunset. I personally prefer to visit at Sunrise.
Vibe: Mystical hilltop shrine with incredible valley views
🛕 Sri Kshetra Devarunda (Dakshina Kashi)
Devavrunda Temple: A Spiritual Haven Near Mudigere
The Mahatobhara Sri Prasanna Rameshwara Temple, Dakshinakasi, Sri kshetra Devavrunda, is dedicated to Sri Prasanna Rameshwara. The temple welcomes visitors from 7 AM to 1 PM and again from 4 PM to 7 PM, providing ample time for devotees and tourists alike to experience its serene atmosphere.
According to local legend, during his 12 years of exile, Sri Rama was captivated by the natural beauty of this region and chose to reside here temporarily. The presence of Rama attracted numerous gods and goddesses, hence the name Devavrunda, meaning a gathering of gods.
This sacred site also holds significance from the times of sages like Kapila and Parashurama. It is said that Parashurama, during deep meditation, discovered a Shiva lingam injured beneath an anthill. After applying sandal paste on the lingam, it turned black and became whole again. This sandal paste, now known as Vajraprasadam, is distributed among devotees as a protective blessing.
Within the temple complex, there are shrines dedicated to Veerabhadra, Ganapathy, Parvathi, and Chennakeshava. Revered as "Dakshina Kashi," the Devarunda Temple offers a unique blend of mythology, devotion, and tranquility for spiritual seekers and travelers alike.
🏞️ Angadi Village
Angadi, holds a special place in Karnataka’s history as the birthplace of the Hoysala kingdom. The village is home to an ancient temple dedicated to Channakeshava, a form of Lord Shiva, which stands as a testament to the region’s rich cultural legacy.
The legend of Angadi is both thrilling and inspiring. It is said that over a millennium ago, the sage Sudatta Muni was performing rituals at a Durga temple in Sasakapura—now Angadi—when a tiger suddenly attacked. Sudatta urged his student, Sala, to “Strike, Sala!” In a decisive moment of bravery, Sala killed the tiger with a single blow. Impressed by this feat, Sudatta guided Sala to establish a kingdom, which became the renowned Hoysala dynasty, with Sosevur as its capital.
Today, visitors to Angadi can explore the temple and ruins that echo this ancient tale. The spot offers a serene glimpse into Karnataka’s past and is an essential stop on any Mudigere tour, especially for those wanting to honor the legacy of the Hoysala rulers. Close by, Anagadi Lake provides a peaceful setting to unwind, making Angadi a perfect blend of history and nature.
🌇 Devaramane
Devaramane, which translates to "God’s home," is a serene hill station nestled in Mudigere Taluk, Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka. Perched atop the Western Ghats' Charmadi hills, this tranquil spot offers not just breathtaking views but also spiritual solace with the ancient Temple of Kalabhairaveshwara. Straddling the border of South Canara and Mudigere, Devaramane perfectly blends natural beauty and cultural heritage, making it a peaceful retreat for nature lovers and pilgrims alike. A visit here feels like a journey into the heart of the Western Ghats' mystique and divine presence. A 10-15 minute uphill walk offers 360-degree scenic views. It’s a must visit place in Mudigere!
NOTE: DAY 2’S ROUTE CAN ALSO BE DONE IN REVERSE ORDER.
Route: Mudigere → Shri Bettada Bhairaveshwara Swamy Temple → Mekanagadde Viewpoint → Devarunda → Angadi → Devaramane

Day 3: Trek to Balekallu & Kodekallu + Charmadi Ghat Stay
Route: Mudigere → Balekallu & Kodekallu Peaks → Charmadi Ghat (Malaya Marutha Stay) | Distance: ~30 km | Time Required: 6–7 hours
🧗♂️ Balekallu & Kodekallu Trek
Balekallu Peak is one of the highest points near Charmadi, about 15 km away. Kodekallu, nearby, is named after an umbrella-shaped rock at its top (“Kode” means umbrella in Kannada). The trek passes through grasslands and forests, is easy, and not long.
Start from Bidarathala on the Charmadi ghat (check exact location on Google Maps). From there, follow a jeep track for about 30 minutes to reach a village home. The track is rough and driving is tough. Watch out for bisons and elephants that use this path.
During monsoon, grasslands can be slippery and leech-filled. It takes 2-3 hours to reach Balekallu peak, then another 30 minutes to Kodekallu. The route is gentle with no steep climbs.
Best time: After monsoon. Avoid summer due to heat and forest fire risk.
Warnings: Beware of bisons and elephants.
Trek Length: ~6-7km roundtrip | Difficulty: Easy to Moderate | Duration: 5-6 hours
Difficulty: Easy to moderate.
Note: No personal visit yet. More details and photos coming soon.

Day 4: Cultural Wrap-up + Drive via Hassan
Route: Gonibeedu → Belur → Doddagaddavalli (toward Hassan) | Distance: ~55 km | Time Required: 6–7 hours
🛕 Gonibeedu Sri Adi Subrahmanya Temple - G Agrahara
A calm, lesser-known spiritual stop
The temple in Gonibeedu village, located about 15 km from Mudigere, is a serene and spiritual destination worth visiting. It houses two main deities: Adi Subramanyeshwara and Paravathamma. Situated in the ancient village of Agrahara, the temple rests peacefully on the banks of the Hemavathi River. Visitors can enjoy bathing in the river or simply relaxing by its calm waters, making the experience even more special. This temple is particularly known for its significance in the ritual of “Naga Dosha Nivarana,” attracting many devotees seeking relief and blessings.
🏛️ Belur – Chennakesava Temple
Must-See: Intricate Hoysala architecture | Ideal for: Photography, history buffs, spiritual seekers
Belur is a historic town located in the Hassan district of Karnataka, India. Renowned for its exquisite Hoysala architecture, it stands as a testament to the artistic and cultural achievements of the 12th century. The Chennakesava Temple, built between 1117 and 1119 AD by King Vishnuvardhana, is the centerpiece of Belur. This temple is famous for its intricate carvings, detailed sculptures, and beautifully carved pillars, which depict scenes from Hindu mythology, including the epics Mahabharata and Ramayana.
Belur’s architecture is notable for its star-shaped platform, sandstone construction, and elaborate friezes that showcase animals, floral motifs, and celestial beings. The town retains its significance not only as a religious site but also as an important heritage destination that attracts historians, architects, and tourists interested in medieval Indian art and culture.
🏛️ Doddagaddavalli – Lakshmi Devi Temple (Hagare)
Type: Ancient stone temple from Hoysala era | Tip: Less crowded and serene compared to Belur
Nestled in the village of Doddagaddavalli in Karnataka's Hassan District, the Lakshmi Devi temple complex dates back to the early 12th century. This unique Hindu site features a main temple with four shrines sharing a common mandapa, each oriented to a cardinal direction. The eastern shrine honors Mahalakshmi, the northern is dedicated to Kali, the western to Shiva—revered here as Lakshmi’s brother—and the southern shrine, once for Vishnu, now lies empty after historical vandalism. The complex also includes a separate Bhairava shrine to the northeast and four smaller shrines positioned at the prakara’s corners. All nine temples display the characteristic pyramidal Nagara shikhara style, reflecting north Indian architectural influence likely from Maharashtra, making it a fascinating blend of cultural and religious heritage worth exploring.
Exit Route (Day 4): Doddagaddavalli → Hassan → Bengaluru or Mangalore depending on your direction
