🛕 Sigandur Chowdeshwari Temple – A Sacred Escape by the Sharavathi River
Tucked away in the serene greenery of Karnataka’s Shimoga district, right by the peaceful banks of the Sharavathi River, lies a temple like no other — the Sigandur Chowdeshwari Temple. This sacred place is dedicated to Goddess Chowdeshwari, also known as Sigandureshwari, a powerful deity revered for her divine protection, especially against theft and wrongdoings.
One of the most unique traditions here is the use of a protective board reading “Shri Deviya Rakshane Ide”. Many devotees place this sign outside their homes or shops, believing that the goddess herself will punish anyone who dares to steal from them. It’s a spiritual shield — and a symbol of deep trust in the goddess’s justice.
🌿 A Temple Surrounded by Nature
Set against the backdrop of lush forests, flowing riverbanks, and close to the Linganamakki Dam, the temple offers not only spiritual peace but also a refreshing escape into nature. The journey here — whether by road or crossing the river by boat — is as tranquil and beautiful as the destination itself.
📜 The Legend Behind the Temple
The origin of the temple is rooted in a fascinating local legend. A man named Sheshappa, lost in the dense jungle, had a divine dream in which the goddess Chowdeshwari appeared and asked him to build a temple in her honor. Moved by this vision, he shared the experience with a respected local Brahmin, Duggajja, and together, they began the construction of the temple. Since then, the site has grown into a significant pilgrimage center.
🗓️ The Grand Ashada Month Pooja
The temple sees a huge influx of devotees during the Ashada month (June–July). Special poojas and rituals are conducted during this time, and thousands of pilgrims from across Karnataka and beyond visit to seek blessings and participate in the divine celebrations. It’s an energetic and spiritual experience, where devotion fills the air.
⏰ Temple Timings
Morning: Opens at 5:00 AM with abhishekam and alankara, followed by darshan and sevas until 2:30 PM.
Afternoon Break: The temple remains closed from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM.
Evening: Reopens at 4:00 PM and stays open for darshan until 9:00 PM.
Whether you're on a spiritual journey or just seeking peace amid nature, Sigandur Chowdeshwari Temple offers a powerful blend of faith, folklore, and forest charm. It’s not just a visit — it’s an experience that stays with you long after you leave.
🚗 Getting There: Easier Than Ever
Until recently, the only way to reach Sigandur Temple was via a boat ferry across the Sharavathi River, which carried both people and vehicles. While that ferry ride was a unique experience on its own, access to the temple is now much easier thanks to a newly constructed bridge.
The ferry service has been stopped, and visitors can now drive directly to the temple without any river crossing — making the journey smoother and faster, especially for those traveling with families or on tight schedules.
💧 Facilities & Where to Freshen Up
For those arriving early for morning darshan, no worries — basic fresh-up facilities are available near the temple, provided by the temple trust. These are especially useful for devotees who travel overnight or reach at dawn.
Additionally, there are a few private hotels and lodges nearby that offer rooms for short stays or day-use, making it convenient for visitors to rest, clean up, or even stay overnight if needed.

Day 1, 8am: Shri Bheemeshwara Temple & Waterfalls
Route: Sigandhur → Tumari → Sullali → Kogar Cross → Bheemeshawara Bus Stop

🛕 Shri Bheemeshwara Temple & Waterfalls – A Hidden Gem in the Forests of Karnataka
Tucked away in a quiet corner off the Kargal to Bhatkal road, Shri Bheemeshwara Temple is a unique and ancient cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, set against the mesmerizing backdrop of a natural waterfall and surrounded by the dense forests of the Western Ghats. If you're a nature lover or spiritual seeker with a taste for the offbeat, this spot is pure magic.
🌿 A Temple Wrapped in Nature & Myth
According to local legends, this sacred temple was built by the Pandavas during their exile. The waterfall flows directly over the shrine, making it one of the most mystical Shiva temples in Karnataka. The setting is remote, peaceful, and incredibly scenic — it’s the kind of place that makes you pause and just breathe in the silence of nature.
🥾 Getting There – A Mini Trek Adventure
To reach the temple, you’ll need to get off the main road and trek about 1.5 km through a lush forest path. It's more of a mud road than a trail, and while 4x4 vehicles or local jeeps are available for hire, many prefer walking to soak in the raw beauty of the forest.
The walk itself is beautiful and immersive: green canopy overhead, birdsong all around, and even a small stream crossing with a wooden bridge — perfect for a peaceful break or a few photos.
Just a heads-up: during the monsoon, leeches are common (and seem to love visitors!), so dress accordingly and carry some salt or repellents.
💧 Waterfalls: Look, Don’t Leap!
The waterfall here is sacred, and although it’s absolutely stunning, bathing or playing in the falls is not recommended. The rocks are steep and slippery, and the space near the shrine is limited. However, the view itself is worth every step — especially post-monsoon, when the falls are at their fullest.
📝 Pro Tip: Avoid summer months if you're coming for the waterfall — the flow dries up, and you might miss out on the temple’s true charm.

🙏 The Legend Behind Idagunji 🙏
This ancient temple has roots going back to the end of the Dwapara Yuga. Legend says that sages led by Valakhilya were struggling to complete their rituals due to numerous obstacles. Sage Narada advised them to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha.
Ganesha then descended at a peaceful spot near the Sharavathi River, once known as Kunjavana, and helped complete the rituals successfully. In honor of his blessings, the temple was built here — and the place came to be known as Idagunji.
🏞️ After Lunch: Sharavathi Kandla Mangrove Boardwalk
Post-lunch, make your way to one of Honnavar’s true gems — the Sharavathi Kandla Mangrove Boardwalk. This hidden treasure offers a scenic walk through lush mangrove forests along the backwaters.
The peaceful surroundings, unique wooden pathways, and chance to go boating through the mangroves make this an unforgettable experience. It’s open until 6:30 PM, so you’ve got plenty of time to enjoy the views, take photos, and just soak it all in.
Evening Wind-Down (or Party Time!)
End your day however you like — maybe with a quiet sunset by the backwaters or a little celebration. Party mode, anyone? 😉
Bonus Tip:
Apsarakonda Beach, located just a short distance away, is an ideal spot for those looking to experience a serene and picturesque sunset. The beach is known for its tranquil ambiance, scenic views, and the gentle sound of waves meeting the shore. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant hues, making it a perfect place for photography or quiet reflection. Whether you're a nature lover or simply seeking a peaceful evening, Apsarakonda Beach offers an unforgettable sunset experience that captures the beauty and calm of the coastline.
If you have an extra day, take time to explore the other places I mentioned earlier in this blog. Or, if you simply want to relax and soak in the natural beauty and calming climate of Honnavar — stay a little longer. It’s totally worth it.
